Christian Louboutin, born in 1963 in Paris, France, has been interested in women’s fashion from a young age. His passion for shoes design, influenced by his three sisters, first became apparent during high school where he spent most of his spare time sketching shoes.
Louboutin, who was enthralled by sketching stiletto heels, devoted his late teenage life entirely to this obsession. As a result, he was expelled from four schools, but this certainly didn’t negatively affect his chosen career path. Following school, he travelled around the world to Egypt and India, and received informal design training. These experiences became the major influence and foundation of Louboutin’s elaborate and unique designer shoes.
Soon after, Christian Louboutin displayed his portfolio to the couture design house in Paris and eventually became the talented apprentice of Roger Vivier, the creator of the stiletto. Roger Vivier blessed Christian with the knowledge that “the most important part of the shoe is the body and the heel. Like a good bone structure, if you get that right, the rest is makeup.”
In the 1980’s Christian Louboutin trained with Charles Jourdan and freelance designed for well known designers including Chanel, Yves St Laurent and Maud Frizon. In addition Louboutin received clients such as Princess Caroline of Monaco, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, ‘Sex and the City’ star Sarah Jessica Parker, and a number of other well known Hollywood elites.
Louboutin’s signature mark is the design of red lacquer soles, which feature on every pair of Christian Louboutin heels. These ‘follow me’ shoes have heels that leave behind a rosette print. This instant, distinctive trademark has been described by Christian himself as ‘an element of flirt’.
Christian Louboutin’s unique and fascinating sense of style potentially stems from his alternative, quirky and matter-of-fact personality. His humble vespa, yacht trips and trapeze-flights powerfully contributed to his abstract discoveries. He has a natural talent for discovering inspiration in the most unusual places. Such places include the vibrant colour of red on a lady’s fingernails, signs and strange inspiration from billboards. These abstract, external motivations have led to the manufacture of shoes decorated in vibrant colours with anything from feathers, to satin bows, to silver chains.
Louboutin’s fabulous, yet expensive heels can be purchased from boutiques located in New York, Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, London and Hong Kong. The decadent shoes are also available from a number of luxurious department stores worldwide.
Christian Louboutin’s success, which originally stemmed from various strange and unique ideas, is, without a doubt, an inspiration to fashion designers worldwide.
